Prebiotics More Effective Than Probiotics at Increasing Beneficial Bacteria, says BBC"The prebiotic group increased their good bacteria numbers by 133 million" "The best thing you can do for your health is treat your good bacteria to a prebiotic meal"The BBC took 8 hard-working cowboys and divided them into two groups. One group ate a diet of probiotics - good bacteria found in foods like yogurt. The other group was put on a prebiotic diet - 7g a day of prebiotics to nourish the pre-existing good bacteria. Then, they tested their stool for increased bacteria. Yes, that's right, their poo was examined daily to measure the change in bacteria. The goal was to have the good bacteria (the bifidos and lactos) multiply in number and consequently make the ranchers healthier. The analysis showed the prebiotic group increased their good bacteria numbers by 133 million, in just five days. The probiotic group saw little change. This led the BBC to state: "the best thing you can do for your bacterial health is treat your good bacteria to a prebiotic meal." If you're keen on Dandelion Salad and Chicory Stew, you can check out the prebiotic diet our cowpokes ate to get their daily dose. Unfortunately, many prebiotic-rich foods are tough to add to a balanced diet as they contain more calories, carbs, sugar or other "load factors" than their prebiotic content supports - For example, you would have to eat over 1,100 calories of banana with nearly 250g of sugar to get a daily portion of prebiotic fiber. For that reason, we always suggest using Prebiotin to supplement your prebiotic intake. The study and diets were devised by Gemma Walton PHD, School of Food Biosciences at University of Reading. |
